Officially opened in October 2005 the Lancashire Digital Technology Centre is located on the former Michelin factory site in Burnley.

Funded by the Northwest Development Agency, European Regional Development funds and Lancashire County Developments Limited the new £3.9M, 36,000 sq ft building is a showcase for new technologies and technical training.

Burnley College provide on site technology education and training for its higher education students and employee development.

Over 500 students per year and 290 businesses will obtain training at the centre, which will provide degree level employee specific training programmes for the 21st century.

In addition the centre provides specialist support to manufacturing industries, education & training in new technologies, business incubation office space dedicated to high-tech innovative companies with growth potential and a multi-purpose conference facility including two meeting rooms and an 80-seat lecture/presentation room.

Mr John Searle, Principal Economic Development Officer for the Regeneration & Economic Development Unit at Burnley Borough Council explains, "For this hi-profile venture we needed to provide the best in audio-visual facilities for our meeting rooms and lecture theatre.  We discussed our requirements with a number of potential suppliers but the proposal from Valley Technical Services (VTS) best suited our budget and performance requirements".  John went on to say "VTS listened to our needs and introduced us to other clients and suppliers to a see a range of suitable products in action.  A final shopping list was then produced from these meetings".

The Hitachi Cambridge Board Interactive Whiteboard was chosen along with the Hitachi Data Projector for the two meeting rooms.  The lecture theatre required an altogether more advanced solution.  An Hitachi Interactive Display Panel mounted onto a lectern work hand in hand with a hi-performance Hitachi projector.  This is used with a Panasonic VCR, DVD and Freeview box as well as a dedicated PC controlled by the Hitachi panel.   A new Lutron lighting controller was installed to enable the lights, all the equipment and the sound system to be controlled by an AMX Modero wireless control panel.

On a final note John said "VTS have worked closely with the Centre staff in providing training on the systems to enable us to get the most out of the equipment".

The Centre is owned and managed by the newly formed joint venture company, Lancashire Technology Centre Limited (LTCL).  LTCL is equally owned by Burnley Borough Council, Burnley College, Lancashire County Development Ltd and Northern Technologies Ltd.

UMIST Logo January 5th 2004 was the start date. The brief was simple: supply & install
60 fixed Induction Loop Systems before the end of January. A tight schedule had to be maintained whilst keeping disruption to a minimum.

In order to comply with the Disability Discrimination Act UMIST required the systems to be installed in a variety of state of the art lecture theatres, classrooms and reception areas in Institute buildings all over the campus. Each system was carefully planned in collaboration with the UMIST Estates Department.

The project moved ahead well - our reward, 6 additional systems! With two days remaining all 66 rooms were completed, checked and ready for use! The installation was followed up with a staff training course to familiarise users with the systems.
